AXIOM 16-P
AXIOM 16-P Drum Synth: User Manual
A guide to the free drum synth, sequencer, loop tool and DJ deck that run in your browser. If you have never opened it before, start with the quick start and then read the interface tour.
1. What AXIOM 16-P is
AXIOM 16-P is a drum machine and small workstation that runs entirely in a web page. It has:
- 16 drum pads that you play with the mouse, the computer keyboard, touch or a MIDI controller.
- Several sound engines per pad: a sampler, a subtractive synth (with an FM stage), an additive synth and four more. The factory kits are made with these engines, so there are no audio files to download.
- A step sequencer with 16 pattern slots, ready-made song styles and live recording.
- Effects: reverb and delay for every pad, plus two more flexible effect slots.
- Two loopers and a DJ / LOOP mode with two decks, a crossfader and scratching.
- MIDI input, output, clock and MIDI Learn.
What you need
- A computer with Chrome, Edge or Brave gives the full feature set, including MIDI, choosing an audio output and saving to a folder.
- Safari (including iPhone and iPad) and Firefox play sound and run the whole app, but have no Web MIDI. Safari also has no folder picker and no output-device choice.
- Android with Chrome works with touch and USB MIDI (with an OTG cable). Phones and small screens use the compact layout (see Compact layout).
- Web MIDI needs a secure page. The SynthCraft site is served over https, so this is already the case.
Nothing is installed and nothing is sent to a server. Your work stays in your browser (or in a folder you choose).
2. Quick start: your first sound
- Open the app and click anywhere on the page. A box reading AUDIO ENGINE READY asks for this click, because browsers keep audio silent until you interact with a page.
- Choose where to keep your files. The first time, the app asks whether to use a folder on your computer (it creates a folder called AXIOM Data inside the one you pick), to use the browser’s own storage, or to ask again later. Browser storage is fine to start with.
- Hit a pad. Click one of the 16 pads, or press 1 2 3 4, Q W E R, A S D F or Z X C V. Clicking higher on a pad plays it louder.
- Press PLAY (or the space bar) to start the sequencer. STOP returns to bar 1, step 1.
- Change the drums. In the preset bar, open the KIT ONLY list and choose a kit. Loading a kit never changes your tempo or your pattern.
- Change the rhythm. Open SEQUENCE STYLE and choose a style. This loads 16 patterns and never changes your sounds.
- Hear a whole setup at once. MASTER FULL SET loads a kit, 16 patterns and effects together.
- Set the tempo by typing in the BPM box, dragging the big BPM number up or down, or pressing TAP a few times in time.
- Try the dice. RANDOM KIT makes a new sound for every pad; RANDOM PATTERN writes a new pattern.
- Save your work with FILE → SAVE PROJECT when you like what you have.
Click the page once, open SETTINGS and press TEST SOUND. If it plays, the audio path works and the problem is in the pad or pattern. If not, see Troubleshooting.
3. The interface
The window is a single “instrument”. A top bar holds the tempo, transport, volume, modes and menus. Below it are the pads, the pad editor and (in PERFORM) the sequencer.
The three modes: EDIT, PERFORM and DJ / LOOP
Three large buttons at the left of the top bar choose what the whole app is for. The app opens in PERFORM.
| Mode | Key | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| EDIT | F9 | Designing sounds and kits: every engine, two LFOs per pad, the final filter, four effect slots, rendering and the loop set. There is no sequencer in this mode. |
| PERFORM | F9 | Playing and sequencing. The pads, the full sequencer, the two loopers and a light pad editor. Every pad plays its rendered sample, so it is easy on the processor. |
| DJ / LOOP | F10 | The pads and sequencer switch off and two decks play your loops or whole songs, with EQ, a crossfader and scratch tools. |
A typical workflow: design pads and kits in EDIT; play and write patterns in PERFORM; turn patterns into loops and mix them in DJ / LOOP.
| EDIT | PERFORM | |
|---|---|---|
| A pad plays | The engine of the selected tab (sampler, subtractive, additive, and so on) | Its sample (the sampler) only |
| Pad editor | Full: all engines, LFOs, final filter, four effect sends | Light: level, pan and the reverb and delay sends, plus basic sample controls |
| Effects | Four effect slots | Reverb and delay only |
| Sequencer | Hidden | Complete |
Everything PERFORM does not need is switched off to save processor time. When you return to EDIT it all comes back, and your EDIT effects are kept.
Views
| Button | Key | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| PADS | F1 | Large square pads, with the editor or the sequencer beside or under them. |
| SOUND | F2 | The pads shrink to a strip and the pad editor takes the screen. |
| SEQ | F3 | The sequencer takes the screen (PERFORM). |
| PADS ▾ / PADS ▴ | F8 | Hides or shows the pad strip in the SOUND and SEQ views. |
The app remembers your mode and view between visits.
The top bar
| Control | What it does | Range / default |
|---|---|---|
| BPM display and box | Shows and sets the tempo. Type a value, or press the big number and drag up or down (one BPM per 4 pixels; hold Shift for steps of 0.1). | 40–300, default 120 |
| ↺ PRESET | Applies the tempo, swing and groove saved with the last kit, set, style or pattern you loaded. Greyed out until something is loaded; amber when your tempo differs from it. | |
| BAR / STEP | Current bar and 16th-note step. | 01–08 / 01–16 |
| PLAY / PAUSE | Starts playback; while playing it pauses and keeps its place. | Space |
| STOP | Stops and rewinds to bar 1, step 1. It also stops the loopers and the DJ decks. | |
| REC and the gear next to it | Arms live recording. The gear opens the record setup (see Live recording). | |
| CLICK (bell) | Metronome. The first beat of each bar has a higher pitch. | Off |
| TAP | Tap the tempo. Needs at least two taps and uses the average of the last five. A pause longer than 2 seconds starts a new count. | 40–300 BPM |
| SWING and groove list | Delays off-beat notes for shuffle. 66% gives a triplet feel. The list chooses which notes are delayed: 16th Swing, 8th Swing or Quintuplet Feel. | 50% (straight) to 75% |
| MASTER VOL | Overall output level. Values above 1.0 boost the mix and can overload it; a limiter and soft clipper always protect the output. | 0–1.5 |
| Meters and LEDs | Peak meters, an audio LED (green when the engine runs) and a MIDI LED that flashes on incoming MIDI. | |
| LOAD / DSP badge | Appears while playing when the computer is under strain, or shows how busy the audio thread is. See Tips for slow computers. | |
| FILE, MIDI, SETTINGS | Drop-down menus described in later sections. Only one is open at a time; Esc closes it. |
The tempo rule
Loading a kit, a full set, a sequence style, a pattern slot or a pasted pattern never changes your tempo or swing. Each of these only remembers the tempo it was saved with. To use that tempo, press ↺ PRESET, which sets BPM, swing and groove together. A small tag beside it shows what last changed the tempo: EXT CLOCK, TAP, PRESET, PROJECT or LOOP MATCH. The one exception is loading a project, which restores the tempo, swing and groove saved in it.
The FILE and SETTINGS menus
FILE
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| SAVE PROJECT / LOAD PROJECT | Saves or opens the whole project as one file (see Projects). |
| UNDO / REDO | Steps back and forward through up to 32 changes. |
| SAVE PATCH, SAVE SONG, LOAD | Older, smaller file format: pads and effects (patch), or pads, effects and all 16 patterns (song). No sample audio. |
| MIDI IMPORT | Imports a drum part from a Standard MIDI file into the sequencer (see MIDI files). |
| BAKE LOOP WAV, BAKE PAD WAV, BAKE 16-PAD STRIP WAV | Exports audio: one pass of the active pattern, the selected pad as a one-shot, or all 16 pads one after another. |
| RECORD MIX | Records everything you hear to a stereo WAV until you click it again. |
| EXPORT SAMPLE PACK | Opens the pack exporter (see Export). |
SETTINGS
| Control | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| OUTPUT DEVICE | Sends audio to the speakers, headphones or interface you choose (Chrome and Edge). | Default output |

| KITS LOAD AS | SAMPLES loads factory kits as rendered audio (light on the processor). SYNTHS loads them as live, editable synths. Applies to the next kit you load. | SAMPLES |
| MONO PADS | A pad cuts its own previous hit when struck again. Hits closer than 45 ms (flams, ratchets) still overlap. | On |
| VOICE LIMIT | Most voices allowed to sound at once. Capped at 16 in PERFORM. | 8–96, default 32 |
| AUDIO BUFFER | LOW LATENCY, BALANCED or SAFE (SLOW PC). Takes effect after you reload the page. | BALANCED |
| FOLLOW CLOCK and CLOCK OFFSET | Follow an external MIDI clock; fine timing trim in milliseconds (see MIDI clock). | Off, 0 ms |
| STORAGE FOLDER | Changes where the app keeps its files. A switch can copy the existing files to the new place. After a restart the browser may ask for one click to let the app use the folder again. | |
| SAMPLE RATE | Audio engine sample rate. AUTO follows the sound card; 44.1, 48, 88.2 or 96 kHz can be forced after a reload. | AUTO |
| UI SIZE | Size of the whole unit. AUTO grows with the window on large monitors, or fix it between 100% and 250%. | AUTO |
| FX AUTO-MUTE ON OVERLOAD | When the computer keeps falling behind, switches the reverb out for 8 seconds. For slow computers only. | Off |
| COMPATIBILITY | Lists anything your browser lacks. |
Some switches (SLOW CPU, PAD LIGHTS, MONO PADS, FOLLOW CLOCK) are not remembered between visits. KITS LOAD AS, AUDIO BUFFER, mode and view are.
Compact layout (phones and small screens)
On a phone, a small window or a touch screen, the app opens in a compact layout: the menu and the EDIT | PERFORM | DJ buttons at the top, page tabs below them, and 16 large pads that change meaning with the tab. The COMPACT and FULL buttons (or Alt+4) switch layouts on any device.
| Tab | What the 16 pads do |
|---|---|
| KIT | Play the 16 drum sounds. In EDIT, a tap also selects the pad for editing. |
| SEQ | Show the 16 steps of the current track and bar. Arrows pick the track (including LOOP A and B) and the bar; M and S mute and solo. |
| PATTERNS (PERFORM) | The 16 pattern slots. Tap = next bar; double tap = at once. |
| LOOPS (DJ) | The 16 loops. Tap loads the selected deck; hold loads the other deck. |
| USER | Four banks (A–D) of 16 pads you assign yourself to about 130 functions: transport, tempo, kits and patterns, pad sound controls, looper and deck controls, and the modes. Use ASSIGN or hold a pad. |
Under the pads are play, stop, record, tap tempo and BPM buttons. A sheet button opens the editing panels (synth, LFO, final filter, effects, loopers, loop set, tools). The menu holds the kit, set and style lists, project save and load, rendering, export, MIDI and storage.
4. The 16 pads
The 16 pads sit in a 4 by 4 grid. Hover a pad to see its name and keyboard key.
| Row | Pads | Keys | Usual roles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–4 | 1 2 3 4 | Kick, sub kick, snare, snare 2 |
| 2 | 5–8 | Q W E R | Clap, rim, closed hat, open hat |
| 3 | 9–12 | A S D F | Low tom, mid tom, high tom, crash |
| 4 | 13–16 | Z X C V | Ride, percussion 1, percussion 2, one effect hit |
Every kit keeps this order, so the patterns of a style play the right sound in any kit. Two extra round pads, LP A and LP B, sit under the grid and play the two loopers (see Loopers).
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Click or tap a pad | Plays it and selects it for editing. |
| Click higher or lower on a pad | Higher is louder (velocity about 0.5 at the bottom edge to 1.1 at the top). |
| Press its key | Plays and selects the pad. Keys are ignored while you type in a text box and while Ctrl, Alt or Cmd is held. |
| Drag an audio file onto a pad | Loads it as that pad’s sample. |
| REC armed while playing | Hits are written into the pattern. |
Pad lights. A pad flashes for a moment when its sound plays, whether the hit comes from the sequencer, MIDI, a key or the mouse. Hi-hat choke. The closed hat (pad 7) cuts the open hat (pad 8), as on a real kit.
Tools under the pads
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| RANDOM KIT | Generates new sounds for all 16 pads, each following the rules of its category. The UNIQ slider (0–100%, default 25%) sets how wild it gets; 0 keeps to genre conventions. |
| RANDOM PAD | Randomizes only the selected pad. |
| EDIT SOUND | Switches to the SOUND view. |
| RENDER KIT | Renders every pad to its sampler (see Rendering). |
5. The pad editor and sound engines
Select a pad and open the SOUND view (F2, or EDIT SOUND). The PAD SOUND ENGINE area has a tab for each engine. The lit tab is what the pad plays in EDIT mode. Each pad remembers the settings of every engine, so you can switch back and forth and compare.
- SAMPLER: plays a recording. This is the voice used by PERFORM.
- SUBTRACTIVE SYNTH: oscillators and noise, shaped by envelopes, filters and drive, with an optional FM stage.
- ADDITIVE SYNTH: a bank of sine-wave partials you can draw and shape.
- Four more engines, described in More engines: physical model, waveshaper, wavetable and vocoder.
Most sliders are drawn as rotary knobs. Drag a knob up or down to change it, hold Shift for fine steps, and double-click to reset it. Hover any control for a tooltip that explains it.
Rendering to the sampler
Every pad has a sampler, and the sampler’s sample is what PERFORM plays. Synth sounds are turned into samples by rendering. A pad with no sample is rendered automatically when you enter PERFORM.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| RENDER TO SAMPLER | Plays the pad’s current engine once, offline, and stores the result in the sampler. It includes the engine, both LFOs, the final filter, drive, attack and the chord. It does not include pad volume, pan, tune or the send effects. You stay on the engine tab, so you can keep editing. |
| + SEND FX (checkbox) | Also prints the pad’s send effects into the sample. The sends then go to 0 because the effects are inside the sound. |
| PRINT SEND FX | Prints the send effects into the current sample without rendering the engine again. Useful for a heavy reverb on a snare: it costs processor time once instead of at every hit. |
| RENDER KIT | Renders every pad of the kit. |
| CONVERT TO ADDITIVE | Measures the subtractive sound and recreates it as an additive synth you can edit. |
| PREVIOUS SAMPLES 1–5 | The last five samples of the pad. Every render, load or kit change pushes the old sample here; click a number to bring it back. |
| State text | SAMPLE = THIS ENGINE means the render is up to date. EDITED SINCE RENDER means you changed something since (the pad also shows a dot). |
These buttons are repeated at the top of each engine page. Rendering never changes which engine tab you are on.
Sampler
Use the sampler for recordings, for light-weight pads and for rendered synth sounds. It is the best engine for live playing.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| SAMPLE PACK list | Creates a short synthesized hit (808 Sub Kick, 909 Punch Kick, Acoustic Snare, Trap Clap, Crisp Closed Hat, Sizzle Open Hat, 808 Rimshot, Wood Clave, Lo-Fi Shaker, Acoustic Floor Tom, Bright Crash Cymbal, Ride Cymbal Bell) and loads it as the sample. |
| LOAD SAMPLE FILE | Opens a file (wav, mp3, ogg, flac or anything your browser can decode). You can also drop a file on a pad. |
| AUDITION | Plays the pad once. |
| Waveform and crop markers | Drag the two markers to choose what part of the sample plays. Clicking elsewhere moves the nearer marker. |
| AUTO-TRIM | Sets the crop around the sound, removing leading and trailing silence. |
| NORM | Normalizes the sample to a peak of about −0.2 dB. |
| REVERSE | Reverses the sample. Reset the crop afterwards. |
| RANDOM | Randomizes the envelope, filter and a small pitch change. |
| CONVERT SAMPLE TO ADDITIVE SYNTH | Analyses the sample and creates an editable additive version. |
| CONVERT SAMPLE TO SUBTRACTIVE SYNTH / MATCH SUBTRACTIVE SYNTH TO SAMPLE | Measure the sample (pitch glide, brightness, noise amount, decay) and set the subtractive synth to resemble it. This overwrites the oscillators, noise, envelope, filter and drive of the subtractive synth. |
| Control | What it does | Range / default |
|---|---|---|
| ATTACK | Fade-in from silence. | 1 ms–0.2 s, 2 ms |
| DECAY | Time to fall from the peak to the sustain level. | 0.02–2 s, 0.25 s |
| SUSTAIN | Level held until the sample ends. At 1.00 the sample plays out in full and DECAY does nothing. | 0–1 |
| RELEASE | Final fade-out. | 0.01–2 s, 0.05 s |
| CUTOFF | Filter cutoff. At 20 kHz the filter is bypassed in lowpass mode. | 200 Hz–20 kHz |
| RESONANCE | Filter Q. | 0.1–18, 1.0 |
| FILTER TYPE | Lowpass or highpass. | Lowpass |
There is no pitch slider in the sampler itself. Use OVERALL PITCH in PAD CONTROLS. For samples it changes playback speed, so +12 semitones plays twice as fast and half as long.
In PERFORM mode the sample strip shows the waveform of the selected pad with one rubber-band tool. Drag the two vertical handles to set where the sample starts and stops; drag the two round points to set the fade-in and fade-out.
Subtractive synth
Sound starts in up to three oscillators and two noise generators. They are summed, shaped by an envelope and filters, then driven. Soft hits sound darker and hard hits brighter.
The top row has RECIPE CATEGORY (Kick, Snare, Hi-Hat, Crash Cymbal, Ride Cymbal, Clap, Tom, Wood Block, Rim Shot, Bell and many more), CHAOS and RANDOMIZE SUB SYNTH. Choosing a category loads a starting patch and sets the effect sends to 0. Randomize varies the pad within ranges that suit its category; CHAOS (0–100%, default 25%, the same value as the UNIQ slider) sets how far it strays. Below are seven tabs: OSC 1, OSC 2, OSC 3, NOISE 1, NOISE 2, FM SYNTH and SUM & SHAPING.
Oscillators
| Control | What it does | Range / default (OSC 1) |
|---|---|---|
| LEVEL, PAN, MUTE | Level before the main envelope; stereo position; silence this source. | 0–1 (0.90); −1 to +1 |
| WAVEFORM | Shape of the oscillator (see below). | Sine |
| START FREQ (HZ) | Frequency at the instant of the hit. | 30–600 (145) |
| PITCH END (HZ) | Frequency the pitch glides to. This is an end frequency, not an amount. Set it equal to START FREQ for a fixed pitch. | 0–400 (48) |
| PITCH DECAY | Time of the glide. Short means a click and punch; long means a laser-like sweep. | 0.005–0.5 s (0.05) |
| TONE DECAY | How long this oscillator rings. | 0.01–2 s (0.35) |
| FINE TUNE (CENTS) | Detune; 100 cents is one semitone. | −100 to +100 |
OSC 2 and OSC 3 have the same controls with different starting values and wider frequency ranges. The waveforms are: Sine, Triangle, Saw + (Rising), Saw − (Falling), Square, Rectangle (25%), Random / S&H, Sub Sine, Hyper Saw, Metallic Bell, 808 Bridged-T Sub (the 808 kick resonator), 909 Snap Resonator (the 909 kick core), 6-Schmitt Metallic Cluster, and three cymbal oscillators:
- Metal Cluster: 6 squares: six square waves at the inharmonic ratios of the TR-808 hat and cymbal circuit.
- Shimmer Cluster: 12 beating squares: the same six with a slightly detuned twin each, so the metal shimmers like a crash or ride.
- Modal Plate: 14 inharmonic modes: the vibration modes of a struck plate, for clanging cymbal bodies.
Noise generators
Each noise generator has LEVEL, PAN, MUTE, TYPE, HP CUTOFF (HZ), LP CUTOFF (HZ) (together a band-pass), PRE-ADSR ATTACK and PRE-ADSR RELEASE. Types: White, Pink, Brown / Red (dark), Metallic Cluster, Velvet (sparse clicks) and Sizzle (grainy glitter, good for cymbals). Defaults: NOISE 1 is pink at 0.20 (HP 20, LP 1800 Hz); NOISE 2 is off at 0.00 (HP 3000, LP 6500 Hz).
SUM & SHAPING
| Control | What it does | Range / default |
|---|---|---|
| ADSR ATTACK / DECAY / SUSTAIN / RELEASE | The main envelope applied to the whole sum. Use sustain 0 for drum hits. | Attack 0.002 s, decay 0.25 s, sustain 0.00, release 0.10 s |
| SHAPING HP / SHAPING LP | High-pass and low-pass on the summed sound. | 20 Hz / 20 kHz |
| RESONANT CUTOFF / FILTER RESONANCE (Q) | A resonant low-pass filter that is always in the chain. | 20 kHz / 1.0 |
| DRIVE ALGORITHM | Regular Distortion, Fuzz Distortion, Excite Overtones, Reduce Overtones, Reduce & Crunch, Ring Modulator, Compression + Distortion. | Regular |
| DRIVE AMOUNT / DRIVE MIX (WET %) | Drive strength and the share of driven signal. At a mix of 0 the drive does nothing. | 0 / 100% |
Several decays multiply with each other: each oscillator’s TONE DECAY, each noise RELEASE and the main ADSR DECAY. If a sound is shorter than you expect, lengthen the main ADSR DECAY. If hats and cymbals sound dull, check that RESONANT CUTOFF is at 20 kHz. Recipes and Randomize set a drive amount but leave DRIVE MIX alone, so raise DRIVE MIX to hear the drive.
FM SYNTH
The FM stage adds one carrier oscillator whose pitch is bent by any of your sources. Tick FM STAGE ON, then tick the sources that should act as modulators in SEND INTO FM. A ticked source leaves the normal sum and bends the carrier instead. It is off by default, and with it off the pad sounds exactly as before.
| Control | What it does | Range / default |
|---|---|---|
| CARRIER WAVE | Sine, Triangle, Square or Saw. | Sine |
| CARRIER RATIO | Carrier pitch as a multiple of OSC 1’s pitch. | 0.25–8, 1 |
| FM INDEX | Depth of modulation. 0 is a plain carrier. | 0–12, 2 |
| INDEX DECAY (S) | How fast the depth dies away. Short gives a bright attack that turns clean. | 0.01–2 s, 0.12 |
| CARRIER DECAY (S) / CARRIER LEVEL | The carrier’s own fade-out and loudness in the mix. | 0.02–3 s, 0.35 / 0–1, 0.80 |
Starting points
- 808-style kick: OSC 1 on 808 Bridged-T Sub, level 1.0, start 130 Hz, end 48 Hz, pitch decay 0.025, tone decay 1.4; a touch of pink noise as a click; ADSR decay 2.0, sustain 0; shaping HP 24 Hz.
- Snare: a sine body near 260–330 Hz with a short decay, plus loud white noise (HP 2 kHz) with a release around 0.4 s.
- Closed hat: two metallic oscillators plus metallic noise high-passed at 7 kHz, short ADSR decay (about 0.12 s). Put the open hat (longer decays) on pad 8 so the closed hat chokes it.
- Clap: two layers of noise, the second delayed a few milliseconds with a slower swell.
- Tom: a sine with a quick pitch drop and a little noise for the stick; use lower start and end frequencies for the lower toms.
- Cymbal: Modal Plate with a Metal Cluster and a Shimmer Cluster, Sizzle noise and a long decay; or add the FM stage with a cluster as the modulator.
Additive synth
An additive pad creates its sound by adding many sine waves, called partials. Each partial has a frequency, a level and a decay time. Bells, toms, glass, wood and metal are a handful of partials fading at different speeds, which is hard to make any other way. A pad can hold up to 128 partials. Live hits use up to 32 oscillators; to hear more, render the pad to the sampler. The badge ~N osc/hit shows the cost of one hit.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| CONVERT FROM SAMPLE | Analyses the pad’s sample (the cropped part) and replaces the partials with the result: frequencies, levels, decays, attack time and a noise residual. Set the crop with AUTO-TRIM first. |
| Partial count list | 16, 24, 32, 48 or 64 partials, used by conversion, copy tone and series presets. |
| RANDOMIZE | Creates a new random bank with random shaping. |
| Series presets | Replaces the partials with a classic series: Saw, Square, Triangle, Pulse 25%, Organ drawbars, Bell, Glass, Clarinet, FM Bell, Tubular bell, Vibraphone bars, Marimba bars, Singing bowl, Gong / tam-tam, Gamelan metallophone, Cymbal cluster, Hi-hat cluster. |
If you edit an additive pad that has been rendered, an orange note reminds you that edits are not heard in PERFORM until you render again.
The partial editor
The large canvas shows one bar per partial. The upper part shows level; the lower purple lane shows decay time on a log scale from 0.02 to 8 seconds. Bars move from cyan to orange as the harmonic ratio rises, and inharmonic partials are drawn in orange. Hover a bar to read its frequency, harmonic number, level and decay.
| Gesture or key | Result |
|---|---|
| Drag across the bars | Draws levels. Shift+drag draws a straight ramp; Ctrl+drag scales the bar under the pointer. |
| Drag in the lower lane | Sets decay times. |
| Right-click a bar | Mutes it. Shift+right-click solos it. |
| Alt+click | Restores the analysed level of that bar (after a conversion). |
| Arrow keys | Left and right select a partial; up and down change its level by 1 dB (Shift 6 dB, Alt 0.2 dB). Click the canvas first. |
| [ ] M S Del 0 | Shorter and longer decay, mute, solo, delete, restore analysed level. |
The EDIT row has A / B (which bank you edit), undo and redo arrows, and tool buttons: NORM (loudest = 1.0), SMOOTH, FLAT, INVERT, +H / -H (move every partial up or down one harmonic step), SNAP (to whole harmonics), + PARTIAL, - PARTIAL, UNMUTE ALL and COMMIT TOOLS, which prints the effect of the shaping sliders into the partials and resets those sliders (muted partials are deleted for good). The audition box plays the pad after every edit.
Shaping sliders
These work on top of the stored partials every time the pad plays, so they can be changed freely. They act on harmonic numbers, so they stay correct when you change the pitch.
| Group | Sliders |
|---|---|
| Spectral shaping | SPECTRAL TILT (darker or brighter), ODD / EVEN HARMONICS, LOW END and TOP END shelves with their corner harmonics, FORMANT BUMP with frequency and width, COMB (NOTCHES) with spacing and shift, HARMONIC STRETCH (bell- or piano-like), INHARMONICITY (METALLIC). |
| Shimmer, sizzle, dive and bloom | SHIMMER (BEATING TWINS), SCATTER (RANDOM DETUNE, CENTS), SIZZLE (RANDOM LEVEL FLUTTER), PITCH DIVE (SEMITONES) with DIVE TIME (ms), and BLOOM (HIGHS ENTER LATER). For metal, glass, cymbals and zaps. |
| Time, level and noise | PHASE (Spread, All sine, All cosine), DURATION SCALE, DECAY TILT (highs die first or last), ATTACK (ms), PUNCH (TRANSIENT), SUB-OCTAVE, NOISE (RESIDUAL) and FLOOR (dB) (quieter partials are left out, which saves processor time). |
Morph layer B
Layer B is a second set of partials copied from any pad and blended with the pad’s own (layer A) during each hit. Choose a pad in the list and press COPY TONE → B; tick align pitch to transpose it to match. Choose Cross-fade (A fades out as B fades in) or Glide (partials slide) (matching partials slide from A to B). MORPH START and MORPH END set how much of B is heard at the start and end of the hit (both 0 means B is silent), MORPH RAMP TIME sets the time between them and MORPH CURVE bends it. B → A, SWAP A/B, COMMIT BLEND → A and CLEAR B manage the two banks.
A bell: FM Bell series, SHIMMER 0.5, SCATTER 8. A cymbal: Cymbal cluster series with the base pitch near 1 kHz, SIZZLE 0.5, DECAY TILT 0.5 and NOISE (RESIDUAL) 0.5. A laser zap: any series with PITCH DIVE +24 and a short DIVE TIME.
More engines
Four more tabs appear in EDIT. Each has RANDOMIZE and DEFAULTS buttons, a tooltip on every slider, and every slider can be an LFO target. They are light on the processor because a hit is calculated once and then played from memory.
| Engine | What it is and what it is good for |
|---|---|
| PHYSICAL MODEL | A struck or plucked object calculated from physics. MODEL: Waveguide (a string or tube) or Modal resonator bank (membrane, bar, plate, bell, wood, glass and more). EXCITER sets what hits it (noise burst, impulse, mallet, brush, stick click) and where (STRIKE POSITION). BODY sets damping, stiffness and the overtone pattern. SKIN, WIRES & STEREO adds the tom “boing” (TENSION BEND), snare-wire rattle and stereo width, plus a noise wash for cymbals. Good for toms, congas, wood blocks, bells, plates, gongs, tuned percussion and plucked strings. |
| WAVESHAPER | A simple tone (or the sound of another engine, a sample or a looper chosen with INPUT) is pushed through a curve that clips, folds or bends it into rich harmonics. Shapes: soft clip, hard clip, wavefolder, sine fold, Chebyshev harmonics, asymmetric, phase distortion, bit / rate crusher. DRIVE FOLLOWS LEVEL gives a bright attack and a clean tail. With the sampler as input, rendering replaces the sample with the shaped version; the original stays in PREVIOUS SAMPLES. |
| WAVETABLE | Two tables play together and are mixed. Each has 16 morphing waveforms; 25 tables are included, made for drums, percussion and effects (kick body, snare shell, wood block, metal bell, glass, zap, laser, vocal, FM bell and more). Controls cover table position and its sweep during the hit, pitch envelope, hard sync, warp, FM, unison, sub and noise. |
| VOCODER | Works like a vocoder in reverse. It reads the strongest partials of the additive synth (up to 18); each becomes a filter band that opens and closes with that partial’s level and decay, and the filter bank shapes a carrier: saw, pulse, noise, or the sound of another engine, a sample or a looper. Design the spectrum on the ADDITIVE tab (EDIT THE BANDS) and listen here. Mode Vocoder plays only the bands; EQ sculpt keeps the carrier and lets each partial lift or cut its band. Tick MIDI IN PLAYS THIS PAD to play pitches from a MIDI keyboard. |
Chord. The CHORD strip (on the vocoder page) plays up to four notes at once from a single hit: four note lists (semitones above the pad’s pitch, or off) and TRANSPOSE (−24 to +24). It works with every engine and is part of the render.
LFOs
Each pad has two LFOs (low-frequency oscillators) that move any slider of the pad editor during a hit. There are about 170 possible targets: oscillators, noise, filters, FM, envelopes, additive shaping, the final stage, pad volume, pan and tune, the other engines, and even the other LFO.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| SHAPE | Sine, triangle, square, saw, ramp, random (a new value each cycle) or smooth random. |
| RATE (HZ) | Speed, 0.05–40 cycles per second. |
| TEMPO SYNC | One cycle per note division. Free (Hz) turns sync off. |
| DEPTH | How far the target moves. Negative flips the direction; 0 is off. |
| TARGET | The parameter to move. |
| START PHASE | Where in its cycle the LFO is at the start of a hit. |
| RETRIGGER ON HIT | Restarts the LFO on every hit so every hit sounds alike. Off lets it run with the clock. |
| UNIPOLAR | Moves only upward from the current value. |
Pitch, filter cutoffs, resonance, levels, pan, FM index and the final filter move continuously within the hit. Other parameters take one value per hit. All LFO movement is included when you render to the sampler.
PAD CONTROLS
The final stage at the right of the editor applies to every engine. In PERFORM only volume, pan, the sends and basic sample controls remain.
| Control | What it does | Range / default |
|---|---|---|
| PAD VOLUME | Level of the pad. | 0–1.5, 0.85 |
| STEREO PAN | Left to right position. | −1 to +1, centre |
| OVERALL PITCH | Transposes the pad in semitones. For samples it also changes speed. | ±24 ST, 0 |
| FILTER MODE, FILTER CUTOFF, FILTER RES (Q) | Final filter: Off, Lowpass or Highpass. | 20 kHz, Q 1.0 |
| ATTACK (S), RELEASE (S) | Fade-in and fade-out of the finished sound. | 0.002 s / 0.25 s |
| VELOCITY RESPONSE | How much the played velocity changes the pad. 100% is full dynamics; 0% makes every hit equally loud. | 100% |
| VELOCITY CURVE | Positive lifts soft hits; negative makes the pad more dynamic. | 0.00 |
| DRIVE / OD | Final distortion. | 0% |
| SEND 1 (REV) to SEND 4 (DRV) | How much of the pad goes to each of the four effect slots (see Effects). Factory kits start with all sends at 0. | 0–1, 0 |
6. Kits, sets and styles
The preset bar at the right of the second row has three levels of preset, from biggest to smallest.
| List | What it loads | What it never touches |
|---|---|---|
| MASTER FULL SET (star) | A complete setup: a drum kit, its effects, a style’s 16 patterns, then pattern 1. About 30 sets. | Tempo and swing (use PRESET) |
| KIT ONLY | The 16 pad sounds, the master level and the kit’s effect and compressor settings. Over 40 kits, from vintage machine emulations to genre kits and a sound-effects kit. | Patterns, tempo, swing |
| SEQUENCE STYLE | 16 pattern slots arranged as a song, then pattern 1. About 30 styles. | Sounds, tempo, swing |
- Choosing a set also moves the KIT and STYLE lists to the matching entries.
- Loading a kit replaces everything you did to the pads, including edits and loaded samples. Loading a style or set replaces all 16 pattern slots. Save a project first, or use UNDO.
- A kit also replaces the master compressor and reverb settings and sets the master level. If the volume changes after a kit load, adjust MASTER VOL.
- A first-time user starts with the lightest reverb, Light Room. Once you choose a reverb yourself, kits may bring their own.
- Kits are stored as synth settings and as rendered samples. With KITS LOAD AS: SAMPLES the rendered sound loads, which is light on the processor; with SYNTHS the pads stay live and editable. The first time you use a kit it is rendered on your computer, which takes about a second, and the result is kept for next time.
Pattern order of a style
Every style is one song of 16 parts, colour coded on the pattern buttons:
| Buttons | Part | Colour |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Verse 1–4 (each layers on the one before) | Red |
| 5–7 | Chorus 1–3 (Chorus 3 is the peak) | Orange |
| 8 | Bridge | Orange-yellow |
| 9–10 | Long Intro (4 bars) and Short Intro (2 bars) | Yellow |
| 11–12 | Fill 1 and Fill 2 | Yellow |
| 13–16 | Percussion loops 1–4 (no kick), made to layer over the verses and choruses on the DJ decks | White |
7. The sequencer and patterns
The sequencer is part of PERFORM mode. The toolbar at the top (patterns, bars, style and random pattern) stays in view while the track rows scroll beneath it. The TOOLS button opens the rest of the tools and the full grid; closed, the pads stay large.
How it is organised
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Track | One row of steps. Tracks 1–16 play pads 1–16. Tracks 17 and 18 play Looper A and Looper B. |
| Step | One 16th note. A track has 16 steps per bar. |
| Bar | A page of 16 steps. Each track stores 8 bars (128 steps). The shown bar is called MEASURE n / 8. |
| Pattern | All tracks and bars, plus a length of 1–8 bars. Sixteen patterns are kept in the pattern slots. |
| Pattern length | The LIMIT setting (1 to 8 bars). The pattern plays bars 1 to LIMIT, then starts again. Bars after LIMIT are kept but not played. |
You edit one track at a time in the step row. Select a track by pressing its pad (or a looper pad). The step lights under STEP // BEAT follow the playhead while the bar you are looking at is the one playing. Steps 1–4 are red, 5–8 orange, 9–12 yellow and 13–16 white, so you can count beats at a glance.
Steps
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Click a step | Switches it on or off. When switched on you hear the pad at that step’s velocity. |
| Press and drag across steps | Paints steps on or off, depending on the first step you pressed. |
| Right-click a step, or press its gear button | Opens the step inspector. |
New steps have velocity 100, no timing offset, centre pan and the Normal modifier. Switching a step off keeps its values for when you switch it on again.
Step inspector
| Field | What it does | Range / default |
|---|---|---|
| VELOCITY | How hard the step hits. | 1–127, 100 |
| MICRO-TIMING OFFSET | Moves the step earlier (negative) or later (positive). | −50 to +50 ms, 0 |
| PAN | Moves this step left or right of the pad’s own pan. | −1 to +1, centre |
| CHANCE | How often the step plays. 50% plays about every other pass, decided at random. | 100% |
| STEP MODIFIER | Changes how the step plays (below). | Normal |
| MIDI NOTE NUMBER | The note sent to MIDI out for this step. It does not change the sound. | 0–127 |
Step modifiers
| Modifier | What it plays |
|---|---|
| Normal (Single Hit) | One hit at the step velocity. |
| Double Ratchet | Two hits splitting the step in half; the second is softer. |
| Triplet Ratchet | Three hits splitting the step in thirds, getting softer. |
| Flam / Grace Note | A soft grace note 18 ms before the main hit. |
| Flange Burst (4-Hit Roll) | Four hits across the step, rising in velocity. |
| Ghost Note | One quiet hit at 40% of the velocity. |
| Note Off / Voice Choke | No new hit; cuts the pad’s sound (or stops the loop on a looper track). |
| Hold / Tie | When the previous step also played, its hit keeps ringing with no new attack. |
| Skip Note | Plays nothing and moves this track one step ahead of the others, creating polyrhythms. Press STOP or SYNC GRID to realign. |
Parameter lane
The strip under the step row has 16 cells and four tabs. Press and drag across the cells to draw values.
| Tab | What you draw |
|---|---|
| VEL | Velocity, 1–127. |
| PAN | Stereo position of each step, added to the pad’s pan. |
| MICRO | Timing offset, −50 to +50 ms. |
| MOD | Step modifier. Click a cell to cycle to the next; Shift+click goes back. |
Pad velocity can be a performance in itself: factory patterns use accents, ghost notes and rising rolls. VELOCITY RESPONSE and VELOCITY CURVE in PAD CONTROLS decide how much each pad reacts.
Bars, length and the grid
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| PREV / NEXT, BAR 1 to BAR 8 | Show another bar. Press a bar button while playing to follow it. |
| LIMIT | Pattern length in bars. In chain mode it also decides when the next pattern starts. |
| EXPAND 18 ROWS | Shows all tracks (16 pads and the two loopers) for the shown bar. Click a track name to select it. |
| MUTE / SOLO | Mute the selected track, or play only soloed tracks. The step data is kept. Pressing the pad by hand still plays it. Mute and solo apply to every pattern and are saved in projects. |
| AUDITION | Plays the selected track’s sound once. |
Live recording
Press REC to arm recording. If the sequencer is stopped it starts. Pads you press (mouse, keys or MIDI) while it plays are written into the current pattern at the playhead. The gear next to REC opens SEQUENCER LIVE RECORD SETUP.
| Field | What it does | Range / default |
|---|---|---|
| TARGET PATTERN SLOT | Which slot receives the recording. | Pattern 1–16 |
| SONG ROLE CATEGORY | Role shown on the slot button. | Intro, Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Bridge, Breakdown, Drop, Fill, Outro and more |
| CUSTOM PATTERN NAME | Optional name for the slot. | |
| LOOP LENGTH (BARS) | Length of the recording loop. | 1, 2, 4 or 8 |
| RECORDING MODE | Overdub adds to the existing notes; Overwrite replaces them as you play. | Overdub |
| QUANTIZE SNAP STRENGTH | 100% snaps hits exactly to the nearest 16th. 0% keeps your own timing (up to 50 ms off the step). | 0–100%, 100% |
| METRONOME CLICK | Quarter-note click on or off. | Off |
Velocity comes from where you click the pad, a fixed 100 for computer keys, or the MIDI velocity. A locked pattern slot refuses recording.
Track, bar and pattern tools
Track tools work on the selected track and shown bar. They are refused on a locked pattern.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| RANDOM | Writes a new rhythm for the track, in a style that suits the pad’s category. The UNIQ slider sets how adventurous it is. |
| VEL RAMP | Crescendo across the bar. Shift+click for a decrescendo. |
| HUMANIZE | Random velocity variation of up to 15. |
| FLAMS | Adds a roll or flams at typical spots. |
| PAN SWEEP | Cycles through pan shapes such as ping-pong and left-to-right. |
| SHIFT (both directions) | Moves every step one place earlier or later, wrapping around. |
| REVERSE, INVERT, MIRROR | Plays the bar backwards; swaps hits and rests; copies steps 1–8 onto 9–16. |
| ACCENT | Sets velocity by place in the beat, strong on 1, 5, 9 and 13. |
| HUMAN TIME | Random timing up to 10 ms early or late, keeping the downbeats anchored. |
| CHANCE | Gives off-beat steps a play chance; each click cycles 75%, 50%, 25% and always. |
| COPY TO ALL BARS | Copies the shown bar of this track to all 8 bars. |
| EUCLIDEAN + FILL | Spreads a chosen number of hits (1–16) evenly over the 16 steps. |
| COPY, PASTE, DUPE, CLEAR | Bar tools: copy the track’s bar, paste it into another bar or track, duplicate it into the next bar, or clear it. |
| STYLE list, RANDOM PATTERN | Choosing a style loads its 16 patterns. RANDOM PATTERN fills the 16 pad tracks of the shown bar in that style. |
Pattern tools work on the whole active pattern.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| COPY PATTERN / PASTE PATTERN | Copy the pattern, its length and its saved tempo; paste over the active slot (never changes your tempo). |
| DUPE PATTERN | Copies the pattern into the next unlocked slot and switches to it. |
| LOCK / UNLOCK | Write-protects the slot against recording, paste, dupe and clear. You can still edit steps by hand. |
| CLEAR PATTERN, CLEAR ACTIVE PAD | Clear the whole pattern (after a confirmation) or only the selected track. |
| EXPORT MIDI | Saves the pattern as a Standard MIDI file (see MIDI files). |
| SYNC GRID | Moves all tracks back to step 1 after Skip steps pushed them out of phase. |
Pattern slots and switching
The PATTERNS row has 16 buttons, each showing its number and role (Intro, Verse 1, Chorus 2, Fill and so on). A slot stores all tracks and bars, the length, the role, a name and the tempo it was written at. Slots are saved in projects.
| You do | Result |
|---|---|
| Click a slot while stopped | It loads at once. |
| Click a slot while playing | The slot is cued and starts when the current pattern finishes. |
| Double-click or double-tap a slot while playing | It starts at the next bar line. A second click within 350 ms counts as a double-click. |
A cued button pulses; a slot cued for the next bar line has an orange outline and a faster pulse. Clicking another slot replaces the cue.
- CHAIN: ON turns on song mode. At the end of each pattern the next slot is cued, through slot 16 and back to 1. Choose a style, switch CHAIN on and press PLAY to hear a whole song.
- FOLLOW moves on from an intro, fill or bridge after it has played once, by default to a verse. GOES TO... lets you choose a target for each. Switched off, the part loops until you choose another.
Swing and groove
| Groove | Which notes are delayed |
|---|---|
| 16th Swing | The 2nd, 4th, 6th and so on 16th notes. At 75% the delay is half a 16th. |
| 8th Swing | Every second 8th note (steps 3, 7, 11, 15). |
| Quintuplet Feel | A subtle nudge of steps 2, 4, 6 and so on. |
Swing changes what you hear and what a rendered WAV contains. It does not move steps in the pattern.
Rendering a sequence to a loop
The RENDER SEQUENCE... button in the sequencer area opens a window with three choices:
- Render the active sequence into a loop slot you choose (a slot that already has a sound is replaced).
- Render all sequences to all 16 loops. This replaces every loop and asks first. Empty sequences leave their loop empty.
- Render to a WAV file (16 or 24 bit): the active sequence or all of them, one file each, saved into the app’s data folder, a folder you choose, or downloaded.
Renders use the pads’ samples and the reverb and delay as PERFORM plays them. The tail of the last bar is folded onto the start so the loop repeats without a gap. Shortcut buttons in the loop area (SEQ → LOOP, ALL → LOOPS) do the same.
8. Effects
The effects are send effects: each pad has send knobs that feed a copy of the sound into a shared effect slot, and the slot’s output is added back to the mix. The effect makes the wet signal only; the dry pad stays as it is.
| Slot | Default type | Available |
|---|---|---|
| FX 1 (REVERB) | Reverb | EDIT and PERFORM |
| FX 2 (DELAY) | Delay | EDIT and PERFORM |
| FX 3 (MOD) | Modulation, dynamics / EQ or drive | EDIT only |
| FX 4 (DRIVE) | Modulation, dynamics / EQ or drive | EDIT only |
Edit them in the 4 AUX FX BAYS tab. Each pad has four matching send sliders in PAD CONTROLS. In PERFORM only the reverb and delay exist, as the light Light Room reverb and a basic stereo delay unless you chose others. To bring a heavy reverb into PERFORM, use PRINT SEND FX, or render with + SEND FX.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bay tabs | Choose which slot the controls below edit. |
| FX CATEGORY | Reverbs, Delays, Modulation, Dynamics / EQ or Drive / Harmonics. The reverb and delay slots offer their own category only. |
| ALGORITHM | The effect inside the category. Changing the category picks its first algorithm. |
| TEMPO SYNC | Locks delay times and modulation rates to the tempo (see below). Free (Hz) turns it off. |
| RETURN LEVEL | How loud the wet signal is in the mix. MASTER AUX RETURNS faders control the same thing. |
| PARAM 1 to PARAM 4 | Four parameters whose meaning depends on the algorithm; hover them for a tooltip. |
| RANDOMIZE AUX FX | Randomizes the effect settings. With UNIQ above 40% it may choose new algorithms. |
Reverb and delay
Reverbs: Light Room (cheapest), Plate (default), Studio Hall, Chamber, Cathedral. Controls include pre-delay, size, decay (0.2–15 s), damping, low cut, diffusion, modulation, stereo width and early reflections. Delays: Stereo Delay (default), Ping-Pong+, Tape Echo. Controls include time (or tempo sync), a separate right time, feedback, ping-pong amount, low and high cut inside the repeats, wobble, drive and stereo width; changing the time glides like tape. Moving a knob changes the sound at once and never cuts the tail.
Tempo sync values
Wherever a time is tempo-synced (effects and LFOs), you can choose 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 as straight, dotted and triplet values, plus 1/64 and 1/128 for effects, and 1, 2 or 4 bars. A dotted note lasts one and a half times the straight note; a triplet two thirds.
Live trigger pads
In EDIT, AUX FX LIVE TRIGGER PADS let you play an effect like an instrument. Switch TRIGGER MODE on; each slot is then silent until you hold its trigger pad (or key 5, 6, 7 or 8 for FX 1 to 4). Releasing it fades the effect out, and the effect keeps running while closed so opening a reverb brings in the tail built up so far.
| Control | What it does | Range |
|---|---|---|
| TRIGGER MODE | Turns the gating on or off for all slots. | Off |
| INVERT | The effect is audible normally and cut while you hold the pad. | Off |
| ATT (MS) / REL (MS) | Fade-in and fade-out times. | 0–500 / 0–2000 |
In PERFORM and DJ / LOOP the effects always pass and the trigger pads are not used; trigger mode comes back when you return to EDIT.
The master bus
All pads, the loopers and the effect returns meet in the master bus: a compressor, then MASTER VOL, then a limiter and a soft clipper, so the output never exceeds full scale. Loading a kit may change the compressor and master level. The metronome click goes straight to the output and is not affected.
9. Loopers and loop sets
Looper A and Looper B
The loop tool exists twice. Looper A is sequencer track 17 and Looper B is track 18. Each has its own eight loop slots, level, pan, effect sends and on / off switch, and each can hold a short loop or a whole song. Under the pad grid, LP A and LP B pads play them, with LOOP A: ON / LOOP B: ON switches beside them. Switching one off silences it and frees its processor time.
Tap a looper pad to select that looper and play it. While the sequencer is playing the loop starts on the next bar line (the pad pulses until it does); with the sequencer stopped it starts at once. Sequence a looper like any other pad by putting steps on its track. A trigger plays the loop once; a new trigger cuts it and restarts.
The 8-slot loop slicer
Open the 8-SLOT LOOP SLICER tab (EDIT) or tap a looper pad. The buttons LOOPER A | LOOPER B at the top choose which looper the rack, the waveform and PAD CONTROLS edit.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Slot list | Eight slots. Click one to make it the active loop. Slots 1–4 hold generated drum breaks. |
| + LOAD AUDIO | Loads an audio file into the active slot. You can also drop a file on a looper pad. The tempo is read from the file where possible and guessed otherwise. |
| Waveform | Shows the loop with slice markers. Click to select a slice. |
| DETECT TRANSIENTS | Finds drum hits and places a slice marker on each. |
| PLAY LOOP / STOP | Plays or stops the active slot. |
| MODE | Time-Synced Stretch: the whole loop stretched to the project tempo with pitch kept. Selected Slice Only. Original Pitch/Speed: as recorded. |
| THIS SLOT IS A loop / song | LOOP follows the project tempo. SONG plays once as it is, with no stretching, so you can load a whole mp3 or wav and use the looper as a player. |
| RENDER AT TEMPO / UNDO RENDER | Stretches the loop to the project tempo once, offline, and keeps the result as a plain sample, with no stretching cost afterwards. UNDO RENDER restores the original. |
| MATCH BPM TO LOOP | Sets the project tempo to the loop’s tempo. |
| MANUAL OVERRIDE | Unlocks BPM (40–320), SIG and BARS (1–32) fields to correct a wrong guess. |
| AUTO-PLAY MEASURE | When on, the loop starts at the first bar line after PLAY and repeats every BARS bars. |
| Speed buttons | Half, normal or double speed relative to the project tempo. |
| CONVERT SLICE + EXPORT SLICE TO PAD | Copies the selected slice into a chosen pad as a sample. |
While a looper is selected, PAD CONTROLS (volume, pan, pitch, filter, drive, sends) control the looper instead of a pad.
Loop sets
A loop set is a bank of 16 named loops. The LOOP SET tab (EDIT) lists them and lets you rename, render, load and delete loops, SAVE SET to a file (.axloops), LOAD SET, and CLEAR ALL. Loops come from RENDER SEQUENCE or from audio files. The set is kept in your browser or data folder. Large songs are not kept in the set after a restart.
10. DJ / LOOP mode
Press DJ / LOOP (or F10). The pads and sequencer switch off and the DJ rig opens: two turntables (deck A on the left, deck B on the right, which are the two loopers), the list of 16 loops between them, and under each deck a 3-band EQ and a level fader. The crossfader sits between the decks. Only one loop plays on a deck at a time. The first time you enter DJ / LOOP with empty decks, the app renders a long intro and a percussion loop from the current kit and style and loads them so there is something to play.
Loading and starting
- Click a deck’s platter (or name) to select it, then click a loop pad to load that loop into it. The pad shows which deck holds it.
- LOAD opens an audio file straight into the deck as a song. Dropping a file on a deck does the same. STORE FILES IN A PAD also keeps it in a free loop pad.
- Selecting a deck does not start it. Press the deck’s own PLAY.
- While the clock runs, a started or loaded loop waits for the next bar line. With the transport stopped it starts at once. PLAY on a deck starts the main transport if everything is stopped; STOP CLOCK WHEN DECKS STOP (on by default) stops it again when the last deck stops.
| Deck control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Platter | Spins with the speed. Drag it with the mouse to scratch or nudge the record. |
| PLAY / CUE | CUE during playback stops and returns to the cue point. Stopped away from the cue point, CUE sets it here. Stopped on the cue point, holding CUE previews; press PLAY while holding to keep playing. |
| SYNC | Locks the deck to the project tempo. Loops are synced by default; songs are not. |
| KEY LOCK | Keeps the pitch when the speed changes (items up to 150 seconds). |
| LOOP and LEN 1 2 4 8 | Loop on or off; repeat the last 1, 2, 4 or 8 bars. Songs load with loop off. |
| Pitch fader | Range of ±8% or ±16%, with nudge buttons that bend the speed briefly. |
| BPM, TAP, TEMPO | The item’s tempo (editable, or tap it in). TEMPO makes the project tempo equal to the deck’s speed. |
| Waveform | Shows the whole item with the playhead and cue mark. Click to jump. |
| REV / FWD | Scratch buttons. FWD moves the record forward like a person scratching it; REV does the same backwards. |
| Gear (scratch tool) | Opens ATTACK, SUSTAIN, DECAY, RELEASE and DISTANCE for the stroke, three preset buttons (click to recall, hold about a second to save) and SLIP, which keeps the groove in time under the scratch. |
| HI / MID / LOW and KILL | EQ knobs, each with a kill button (a true cut). Also shape the loops the sequencer triggers. |
| Level fader and meter | Deck volume. |
| Crossfader and CURVE | Blends the decks. FULL keeps both open in the middle; CONSTANT POWER keeps loudness even; HARD CUT closes a deck at once. |
DJ pads
Sixteen DJ pads sit under the decks (deck A pads 1–8, deck B pads 9–16). They are a separate set of effect and shout sounds made by the app: air horn, siren, laser, rewind, scratch, spin down, voice hits, bass drop, riser, boom, radio tuning, news sting, brass hit, crowd and boing. They answer to the normal pad keys, to MIDI notes 36–51 and to a click or touch. Your kit is not touched and plays again when you leave DJ / LOOP. To use your own sound, right-click (or hold) a DJ pad, or open DJ PADS...: LOAD puts a sound file (up to 12 seconds) in a pad, RESET restores the built-in sound, and LOAD 16 FILES... fills the pads in file-name order.
Decks while you play
In PERFORM a small DECK A / DECK B button next to each looper switch opens a mini mixer with play and stop, the loop list, EQ with kill buttons, level and crossfader, so loops can be mixed while you play and sequence.
Layering idea
Render all sequences to loops, then load a verse or chorus loop on one deck and a percussion loop on the other. Use the crossfader and EQ to bring the percussion in and out.
Limits
EQ crossovers are steep, so a kill leaves a little sound right next to a crossover frequency. The tempo of a song is detected roughly, so use TAP to correct it. The loop length buttons assume 4/4.
Deck keys
In DJ / LOOP the plain letter keys play the DJ pads, so deck commands use Shift: Shift+Q A Z W S are deck A play, cue, sync, scratch forward and scratch reverse; Shift+P L M O K are the same for deck B; Shift+1 to 0 load loops 1–10 into the selected deck. Tab switches the selected deck, and [ ] move the crossfader. Every control of the rig can be mapped with MIDI Learn, including a jog wheel for the platter.
11. MIDI
MIDI needs a browser with Web MIDI (Chrome, Edge, Brave or Opera). Without it, the MIDI input list reads “Web MIDI Unsupported”; MIDI file import still works.
Devices and the monitor
| Control | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| MIDI → MIDI IN (USB) / INPUT DEVICE | Chooses the input. The first device found is connected automatically. | |
| IN CH / RECEIVE CHANNEL | Channel to listen on for notes and controllers. Clock and transport messages ignore it. | Ch 10 (GM drums) |
| MIDI OUT / OUTPUT DEVICE | Where sequencer notes, MIDI clock and controller light messages go. Never chosen automatically, so a system synth does not play over your drums. | None / Internal |
| RESCAN | Looks for devices again, for example after plugging in a controller. | |
| MIDI SETUP | Opens the hardware window: devices and live monitor, learn and mapping table, pad controllers. | |
| LIVE MIDI INPUT MONITOR | Scrolling log of notes, velocities, controllers and system messages (the last 60 lines; clock ticks are not logged). CLEAR LOG empties it. |
To MIDI out the app sends a short note (note on and off) for every sequencer step, on channel 10 by default with the step’s MIDI note and velocity, plus MIDI clock (24 ticks per quarter note) and Start, Continue and Stop messages. The clock ignores swing.
What incoming messages do
- Notes 36–51 play pads 1–16 (pad 1 is C1, pad 2 is C#1, and so on up to D#2). Note numbers here follow the convention where middle C is C3 = 60; some programs show them an octave lower. Note 35 also plays the sub kick pad. Velocity sets the pad level, and with REC armed the hit is recorded.
- The NOTE MAP in MIDI SETUP chooses what a note plays. Pads in order from C (default) plays pad 1, 2, 3 and so on from note 36. General MIDI drums plays the pad whose drum role matches the General MIDI note, so a GM drum keyboard or drum track plays kick, snare, toms and hats on the right pads whatever your controller’s layout.
- A control you have mapped yourself with MIDI Learn on a pad note does not take the pad over: the pad plays and the mapping is ignored. Learn that control again on another note.
- Start, Continue and Stop messages start, resume and pause the transport. Some controllers send transport as controllers 116 (stop), 117 (play / pause) and 118 (record) with a value of 64 or more, or as MIDI Machine Control; those work too.
MIDI Learn
- Choose MIDI → MIDI LEARN. A banner reads MIDI LEARN ACTIVE and learnable controls get a dashed outline.
- Click an on-screen control. It pulses and the banner says what it is listening for.
- Press a key or pad, or turn a knob, on your controller. A chime confirms the binding.
- Click the next control, or press EXIT LEARN to finish. Bindings are kept in your browser and are not part of a project.
| Control type | How it responds |
|---|---|
| Pads | A note plays the pad; velocity sets the level. |
| Sliders, number fields and knobs | A controller value 0–127 spreads over the control’s range. |
| Drop-down lists | A controller sweeps through the options; a note steps to the next option. |
| Check boxes and buttons (PLAY, STOP, REC, menus) | A note or controller press clicks them. |
| Sequencer step buttons | Toggle that step of the selected track. |
Navigation buttons (PADS, SOUND, SEQ, the editor tabs) keep working while learn is on; Alt+click one to learn it. File pickers, text boxes and drawing canvases cannot be learned. While learn is on, clicking a control selects it for learning instead of operating it.
Mapping table and learn sets
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Mapping table | Lists every binding with type, channel, note or controller number, range and KNOB MODE. ABS: knob position sets the value. REL: for endless encoders, one tick moves a slider by 1% of its range. REMOVE deletes a binding. |
| LEARN A SET + LEARN ONE / LEARN ALL IN ORDER | Learns many controls at once: pad play or select, mixer mute, solo, volume, pan and sends per pad, the step grid of one pad, pattern slots 1–16, bars 1–8 and loop slots 1–8. SKIP leaves one out. |
| RESET GM DRUMS | Replaces the table with the default map (notes 36–51 to pads 1–16) and removes every learned binding. |
| CLEAR ALL, EXPORT MAP, IMPORT MAP | Delete every binding after a confirmation; save the table to a file; load such a file. |
Pad controllers
MIDI SETUP → PAD CONTROLLERS suits grid controllers such as the AKAI APC Key 25 or mini and the Novation Launchpad. With 8 x 4 pads, the top two rows play pads 1–16 and the bottom two rows toggle steps 1–16 of the selected pad.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| CONTROLLER PROFILE | Sets root notes, keyboard routing and light protocol in one go: AKAI APC Key 25 / Mini, Novation Launchpad, General MIDI drum layout (notes 36–51), or Custom Split. |
| KEYBOARD & DUAL ROUTING | What a note that no pad, step or mapping uses does: ignored (so a keyboard can drive another instrument) or passed to the pads chromatically. |
| SECONDARY MIDI INPUT | A second input device, for example pads plus a keyboard, with its own channel. Clock from it is ignored. |
| PLAYABLE PADS / SEQUENCER STEPS | −OCT and +OCT buttons and a root-note box shift the first note of each range. |
| TRANSMIT HARDWARE LED COLOR DATA, LED PROTOCOL, TEST LEDS | Send colours back to the pads (green = playhead, yellow = active step, red = hit). Choose your controller as MIDI OUT. TEST LEDS runs a light chase. |
MIDI clock
Sending. With a MIDI OUT port chosen, the app sends the clock and transport messages whenever it is not following another clock.
Following. To sync to a drum machine, DAW or hardware sequencer:
- Choose the master’s port as MIDI IN (USB). Clock is read from this input only.
- Open SETTINGS and press FOLLOW CLOCK so it reads ON.
- Start the master. The app rewinds and starts on the master’s next tick; Continue resumes and Stop pauses.
The tempo is taken from the spacing of ticks, may be fractional, and the tag shows EXT CLOCK. While following, typing a BPM or using TAP is overridden by the next clock update. CLOCK OFFSET (−80 to +80 ms) shifts your beats later (+) or earlier (−) against the master: if your kick lands late, use a negative value. Start at 0 and adjust by ear in steps of 1–5 ms. Ableton Link cannot run inside a web page; to follow Ableton Live, send it as MIDI clock.
MIDI files
Export. EXPORT MIDI (pattern tools) saves the active pattern as a Type 0 file at 480 PPQN on channel 10 at the current tempo. Each active step becomes a note with its velocity. Timing offsets, swing, pan and modifiers are not written, and a ratchet is one note. Each pad writes the General MIDI note for its role (kick 36, sub kick 35, snare 38, clap 39, rim 37, closed hat 42, open hat 46, and so on), so a GM module plays the right instrument.
Import. FILE → MIDI IMPORT opens a window for Standard MIDI files (.mid, .midi; type 0 or 1). Choose the file, pick the track if there are several, set how many bars to import (1, 2, 4 or 8), audition it, and adjust the routing table that maps each MIDI note to a pad. AUTO-DETECT GM resets the routing to General MIDI roles. Press COMMIT TO SEQUENCER to import.
12. Projects, autosave and export
Saving and loading
FILE → SAVE PROJECT downloads everything as one .axiomproject file, including sample audio. LOAD PROJECT replaces the current state with a project file; it stops playback first and sets the tempo, swing and groove from the file. It rejects patch and song files, and files from a newer version of the app.
A project contains: tempo, swing, groove, click settings; the master bus; all 16 pads with every engine’s settings and their sample audio; the effect slots; all 16 pattern slots with names, roles and lock state; track mute and solo; chain mode; record settings; and the OFF switches for pads 9–16 and the loopers.
A project does not contain the looper audio, your MIDI mappings (they have their own export), the mode and view, or the current choices in the SET, KIT and STYLE lists.
Autosave
The app checks for changes every few seconds and saves to your browser’s storage, including sample audio. While the sequencer plays it saves at most every 20 seconds to keep playback smooth, and it saves when you switch tabs or close the page. On your next visit a bar offers RESTORE (loads the session, including its tempo) or START FRESH (deletes the autosave). Until you choose, the old autosave is not overwritten.
It lives in this browser, on this device and for this page address only. Clearing site data removes it. Use SAVE PROJECT for a file you can keep.
Undo and redo
Up to 32 steps, from FILE or with Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z (or Ctrl+Y). A step is recorded a moment after you change a control, click a step, draw in a lane or load a preset. Covered: pad settings, mixer, effects, steps, pattern slots and the master bus. Not covered: loading or replacing a sample, tempo, swing and click, loop audio, MIDI mappings, and mode and view. The additive editor also has its own undo for the canvas.
Exporting audio and packs
| Item | What you get |
|---|---|
| BAKE LOOP WAV | One pass of the active pattern as a 16-bit WAV with a 1.5 second tail. |
| BAKE PAD WAV | The selected pad as a one-shot WAV (1.2 seconds). |
| BAKE 16-PAD STRIP WAV | All 16 pads one after another in one WAV. |
| RENDER SEQUENCE... | Sequences to loops, or to 16 / 24 bit WAV files (see Rendering a sequence). |
| RECORD MIX | Everything you hear (pads, loopers, decks, effects) as a stereo WAV until you click it again. Saved in the data folder and offered as a download. |
| EXPORT PACK... | Sample packs: the 16 loops (one WAV each, with the tempo in the name), the 16 kit sounds as one-shot WAVs with a kit description file, and every kit you have opened. Choose WAV 16 or 24 bit and a ZIP download, files in the data folder, or files in a folder you pick. |
Where your files live
The app holds no audio files of its own. Rendered kits, loops, loop sets, sequences, imported MIDI files, renders and projects are kept in the place you chose at first start. With a folder, everything is in a folder called AXIOM Data, which you can copy to a thumb drive or another computer. With browser storage, the files live inside this browser. Change the choice any time in SETTINGS → STORAGE FOLDER.
13. Keyboard shortcuts
Shortcuts do not fire while you type in a text or number box. Function keys also work while a list has focus, and ignore Ctrl, Alt, Shift and Cmd combinations.
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 2 3 4 | Pads 1–4 |
| Q W E R | Pads 5–8 |
| A S D F | Pads 9–12 |

| Esc | Close an open FILE, MIDI or SETTINGS menu |
| Shift+Q A Z W S / P L M O K | DJ / LOOP only: deck A / deck B play, cue, sync, scratch forward, scratch reverse |
| Shift+1 to 0, Tab, [ ] | DJ / LOOP only: load loops 1–10 into the selected deck, switch deck, move the crossfader |
Pad keys are ignored while Ctrl, Cmd or Alt is held and while a key auto-repeats. Modal windows close with their close button, not Esc.
| Gesture | Result |
|---|---|
| Click a pad higher or lower | Higher is louder |
| Drag a knob; Shift+drag; double-click | Change; fine change; reset to default |
| Right-click a step | Open the step inspector |
| Double-click a pattern button | Switch at the next bar line |
| Drag the big BPM number | Change tempo (Shift for 0.1 steps) |
| Drag an audio file onto a pad, looper pad or deck | Load it there |
14. Tips for slow computers
Audio is generated live, so an older computer can crackle or drop quiet sounds. Work through this list in order:
- Use PERFORM mode. It plays rendered samples with just a reverb and a delay, and is by far the lightest.
- Open SETTINGS, set AUDIO BUFFER to SAFE (SLOW PC) and reload the page. Only live pad playing feels the extra delay; the sequencer schedules ahead.
- Keep KITS LOAD AS: SAMPLES and MONO PADS: ON.
- Lower VOICE LIMIT to 16–24.
- Switch SLOW CPU on, and use OFF 9-12 / OFF 13-16 for pads you do not need.
- Use fewer effect sends and keep the reverb light (Light Room is the cheapest). Print heavy effects into a sample with PRINT SEND FX.
- Switch off a looper you are not using with its LOOP switch, and use RENDER AT TEMPO on loops.
- Close other tabs and apps. Chrome and Edge give the best results.
The LOAD / DSP badge
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Hidden | The engine is keeping up (or the browser cannot report load). |
| DSP n% (green) | Average load of the audio thread. Below about 70% is comfortable. Chrome only. |
| LOAD (amber, pulsing) | The engine is skipping quiet hats and percussion, or shedding load. It may add FX MUTED or a count of skipped notes. |
When the app notices it is falling behind, it protects the beat: it widens its scheduling window, halves the voice limit for a few seconds and skips soft ghost notes on non-essential pads. Kick, snare, clap and rim are never skipped, and a kick, snare or clap can steal the tail of a hat or percussion voice. If you need the reverb to stay on regardless, leave FX AUTO-MUTE ON OVERLOAD off (the default).
15. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No sound at all | The browser is holding audio silent until you interact | Click anywhere on the page. Check the green audio LED. In SETTINGS press UNMUTE. |
| Engine is active but silent | Wrong output device, low volume, muted tab | SETTINGS → OUTPUT DEVICE, then TEST SOUND. Check MASTER VOL, the system volume and the tab’s mute icon. |
| TEST SOUND works but pads are silent | Pad muted or switched off, empty pattern, solo on another track | Check OFF 9-12 / OFF 13-16, pad volume, track mute and solo. |
| Hats or percussion drop out | Voice limit or load shedding | See Tips for slow computers. Turn MONO PADS on or raise VOICE LIMIT. |
| Crackles, pops or stutter | Processor overload or a small audio buffer | AUDIO BUFFER = SAFE and reload, use PERFORM, close other tabs, try SLOW CPU. |
| Reverb disappears for a few seconds | FX auto-mute is on and the computer stalled | Switch FX AUTO-MUTE ON OVERLOAD off, or reduce the load. |
| A pad sounds different in PERFORM | PERFORM plays the pad’s rendered sample, which may be older than the engine | In EDIT press RENDER TO SAMPLER when the state reads EDITED SINCE RENDER. |
| A kit sounds different from last time | KITS LOAD AS changed, or you edited the pad | Check the setting and reload the kit. With SAMPLES, wait a moment for the rendered sound to swap in. |
| Kit load changes loudness | A kit sets its own master level | Adjust MASTER VOL. |
| Tempo is not what the preset says | Loading never changes tempo (by design) | Press PRESET. |
| Tempo changed by itself | FOLLOW CLOCK is on or a MIDI clock is arriving | The tag reads EXT CLOCK. Turn FOLLOW CLOCK off. |
| Tempo changed after loading a file | Projects load their saved tempo | Retype your BPM. Undo does not restore tempo. |
| Playback stops by itself | An external Stop or MMC Stop arrived | Check the MIDI monitor. Turn FOLLOW CLOCK off or unplug the controller. |
| REC does nothing | The pattern slot is locked | Unlock it or record into another slot. |
| Project will not load | Wrong file type, file from a newer version, damaged file | Use LOAD PROJECT only for .axiomproject files and LOAD for older patch or song files. Read the message. |
| Restore bar does not appear | No autosave, different browser or address, site data cleared | Open a saved project file. |
| Loop audio missing after loading a project | Looper audio is not part of projects | Load the loop files again, or keep them in a loop set. |
| Controller does nothing | Channel filter, wrong port, MIDI blocked | Set IN CH to Omni, check the monitor, press RESCAN, allow MIDI access in the browser. |
| Notes play the wrong pads | Controller profile or note map | In MIDI SETUP choose the matching profile and note map. |
| Controller lights stay dark | No MIDI OUT port or LED feedback off | Choose the controller as MIDI OUT, tick TRANSMIT HARDWARE LED COLOR DATA, try TEST LEDS. |
| An external synth plays over the drums | MIDI OUT points at a synth | Set MIDI OUT to None / Internal. |
| Controls will not respond to clicks (dashed outlines) | MIDI Learn is on | Press EXIT LEARN. |
| Settings forgotten on reload | SLOW CPU, PAD LIGHTS, MONO PADS and FOLLOW CLOCK are not saved | Set them again. |
| Odd behaviour after the site was updated | Old files cached by the browser | Hard reload with Ctrl+F5, or clear this site’s cache. |
| Storage folder asks to reconnect | The browser forgot permission after a restart | Click the reconnect button once. |
